That is funny! I started reading science fiction in 4th grade, before there was a Star Trek. The book was:
Star Surgeon (1959) by Alan E Nourse
The story was about ALIENISM.
Nourse was a doctor and the future Earth he imagined specialized in medicine. Of course some uppity alien wanted to be a doctor and came to Earth for training. The usual metaphorical crap ensued.
The metaphor did not go over the head of my 9 year old mind. As an arrogant Vulcan I have had no trouble sneering at the humans over the years. ROFL
The book is free in Project Gutenberg now.
