How does language affect thinking? How much does verbal versus literary communication change the effects?
The Tyranny of Words (1938) by Stuart Chase
This is derived from General Semantics by Alfred Korzybski as expressed in his book
Science and Sanity.
Korzybski's ideas attracted the attention of science fiction writers especially Robert Heinlein and A. E. van Vogt.
But is it the possession of superior technology and the power resulting from that technology that convinced many White men that they were superior beings? Are science and technology more important than rhetoric?
I am so excited to see your podcast come out! Thank you so much!!!
I tried to sign up for the mailing list at MutualPersuasion.org, but keep getting rejected. I don't see a way to contact the site as it keeps instructing me to do. Can you help me with this? Sorry to bother you with an admin question, but I see you're associated with the site, which looks terrific, and I seem to be out of options. Thank you.
Hi Deborah. I'm the Mutual Persuasion website manager, Michael Maune. So sorry for the problems you experienced--we're still working out the bugs and in the beginning stages of developing content for the site. We recently updated and migrated to MightyNetworks, which is more for community building and education. If you're still interested, you can check the site now. It should work, and I'll get you approved and in the community. You might be our first member!
I have a childhood friend who just finished a Phd program and he has swallowed the whole snake when it comes to the hegemonic ideology of race and gender that has captured academia. I’ve talked to him and it seems to me that it’s largely because of the pressure he feels in relationship to his career. He’s white and he isn’t graduating from Harvard, and his field is slightly impacted, so I suspect he feels compelled to conform his mind otherwise he won’t find a job. It’s a pretty shitty situation I think. Whether our friendship survives is currently up in the air— not because I’d end it, but because if he ends it, he could affirm in his mind his allegiance to the ideology: my views are heretical.
It raises the question of whether or not there is some absolute standard by which anyone who lives in America actually believes themselves to be American. But I think it is much more likely that any individual self-actualizes and readily accepts that it is possible to have their understanding of themselves reified by American society, culture and law.
It seems rather obvious that anyone who would bother to get a marriage license and accept the pronouncement of someone who speaks of 'by the authority vested in my by the state of X' stands fully in self-determination under a respected American tradition and law.
Any geologist will point out that this land was here millions of years before the "native Americans" showed up which was 10,000+ years before the palefaces. Every individual must decide his/her own degree of acceptance of indoctrination.
I am really skeptical since the ridiculous White Americans cannot handle the physics of supposedly collapsing skyscrapers. Physics does not need to be "reified" it is as real as real gets.
Rhetorician. So that's what I want to be. Now I finally have a name for it. Thanks, Erec! Thanks, Connie!
What a wonderful episode. What a wonderful man. I recently watched a YouTube video where the presenter encouraged his listeners to "get comfortable with silence." To be okay with pausing in conversation, rather than fill those silences with ums and ers and a hundred other guttural distractions. The speakers I admire most don't have these hangups, and some of those speakers are likewise some of the people I admire most in this world.
This is my first encounter with Erec, and it's passive at that, but he certainly is in the running to be one of those people.
I could write more, but I have been writing a great deal today and I need a break. Suffice it for me to say for now that I eagerly look forward to hearing more, and I will take his tuition to heart.
Let me just say this for now : I have a great wealth of lived experiences. And I am certain to create more!

“Shut up Erec”.

This was fun!
Great first podcast, thank you!
I have wondered for years to what extent how many Black Americans live with the Stockholm Syndrome.

I have not heard or read anyone make that association to date.

Wikipedia says reification is a fallacy:
