Great to hear your voices in Perth Western Australia! Long time reader of Michael's Substack. I'm old - 81 - and remember the 60s well and the emergence of Blackness - particularly at then Chicago State College in the late 60s as Black people were beginning to wear naturals and dress in their own style - generally be more openly themselves. As an 'other than Black American' ;-) I can say when I hear Black people evoke that era without any change since those days - my heart falls. I just feel disappointed. When I hear Black Americans talk about how things might have changed for Black Americans since the sixties my ears perk up. Great to hear Black Americans working on it, making sense of it. Like Loury and McWorter. I'm all ears.
