Good afternoon Bowen and Twyman! For me you guys are steady as she goes with on the high seas of good right and just. That’s regardless of the convenient notions of race creed color etc. On the issues of wise elders today as opposed to yesterday the far gone conclusion suggests that we will continue to be by choice relevant or irrelevant.

That said, there’s a key factor worthy of consideration today which for those elders who are willing aren’t withdrawing from leaning in to struggling generations of today. Of course doing so in a measured way is important for one’s personal health and safety. There’s a phrase nowadays that says “Meet People Where Their At”. That suggests that we the last of the cultural old have an obligation to past on whatever gems of wisdom which has afforded us degrees of success to past the torch to those of the new. In fact what I am referencing is a universal principle which is applicable as it relates to the whole human family.

Age carries with it a duty to pass wisdom on. One doesn't have to be wealthy to bequest gems of experience. One merely needs to have lived, and to care about times one will never know. I oftentimes use the word pietas. Pietas, a Roman virtue, means in my view duty towards descendants, born and the unborn. There is a visceral pull behind the word Tradition. We feel tradition when we gaze upon the headstone of an Uncle killed in service to his country, when we are flooded with memories upon sight of Grandma's headstone, when we clear away the sage brush covering up Great Grandfather's headstone. Grandma and Grandma's Grandfather may be gone but their spirit lives on in the memory of the Grandchildren's Grandchildren. In turn, we stand in the same relation to our descendants unborn. We who are old today pass along the mantle, Grandfather to Grandchild and beyond.

It is about honoring the beautiful ones not yet born. It is about the gift of pietas beyond the year 2050. It is about treasuring the best from the 1960s and the 1970s for those who will know the year 2100. Purpose, meaning, one's mission life -- this is the mantle we of the cultural old must leave for those of the unseen future. The greatest gift of all may be...to be a good ancestor.

Thanks for your comment. Caused me to think about the timeless duty of elders.

Great conversation and pearls of wisdom. I am a white 62 year old white man who's plagued myself most of my life with wrong thinking so I have a heart for those holding themselves back. I am encouraged by black people countering the victim mentality in their community. I am hoping for the best for black people in our country. We have no choice but to turn things around. The current direction will be disaster for all people and races.

We can pretend we lack control over our actions. It takes more courage to live an examined life and change course accordingly. Thanks for your comment about what we all have to do in life.

GPT reminds me:

The man you're referring to is Bernard Kinsey. He, along with his wife Shirley and their son Khalil, amassed a significant collection of African American historical artifacts, art, and memorabilia. Bernard Kinsey had a notable career as a manager at Xerox Corporation before dedicating himself to building and curating this collection. The Kinsey Collection, as it is known, has been exhibited globally and is recognized as one of the most comprehensive surveys of African American history and culture outside the Smithsonian Institution.

Bernard and Shirley Kinsey began their collection during their travels, eventually focusing on pieces that reflected their African American heritage. Their collection includes artworks, rare books, manuscripts, and other historical documents that span from the 17th century to the present. The Kinsey Collection has been featured in various exhibitions and has received significant recognition for its contribution to preserving and celebrating African American history.
